Of course, there is a story, or two, in this picture. Many years ago, while still living in Washington State, I had a small plant of this species. It died one winter (a laughable season in winter-rainy Washington, says this Buffalo NY refugee) But I found a nipple, like this, from around the dead plant. I didn't pitch the nipple, which eventually became the plant in the next picture. Mammillarias seem to need to vegetatively propagate, like all the Opuntias. I never counted the hundreds (thousands?) of Mammillaria nipples that I've torn off the various plants having sharp hooked spines. Cacti and most other higher plants (dicotyledons?) can be propagated, with luck, from just about any piece of their bodies.   (41/72)
